They came within an eyelash of perfection. But, the 2-1 loss on penalties Saturday to North Gwinnett in the state championship isn’t what we will remember about this remarkable group of young women. Not by a longshot!
For most of five months, they stood atop the Georgia 7A soccer world. And, for good reason! This team outscored its opponents by a remarkable 108- 4 . They racked up 19 shutouts. And, they won 22 games in a row. It’s a fair argument, that the best team DIDN’T win on Saturday….and if the teams played again, the result might very well be different.
The Lambert Lady Longhorns were (and are) a group of powerful, determined, strong-willed and, most of all, hardworking soccer players. Over the season, they grew into a soccer sisterhood, the bonds of which they’ll share forever.
And, yes, when we saw them score the lead goal on Saturday, we thought they were invincible.
But, it turns out they were not invincible.
In a more important sense, they were even better than that. The love, grace and character they showed in that brief moment of disappointment will far transcend the numbers on a scoreboard.
Thanks for a wonderful season and a lifetime of memories, ladies.
The final word should and will go to their great coach Scott Luthart who tweeted this the day after the final match…
“Came up one game short of our ultimate goal, but I still love them more today than I did yesterday. So blessed to coach this team and so proud of who they are.”
