The Lambert Lady Longhorns (22-0-0) rolled to the finals of the Georgia 7A Soccer Tournament with a hard-fought, but convincing 3-0 win Tuesday over the Brookwood Broncos.
Team scoring leader senior forward Madison Haugen put on another great show for the big crowd at the Horn. She scored two goals and set up a third.
This one didn't come easily, however, for the Lambert girls. Brookwood held them off the scoreboard until late in the first half. Haugen set up Faith Ferrer for the first goal of the match with only 1:03 left in the half. 1-0 Lambert at halftime.
The Lady Longhorns widened their advantage when Haugen fired home their second goal with with 31:29 left in the second half. And, finally, it was Haugen netting her second of the match, slotting home a penalty kick with 10:36 left in the match.
The Lambert defense and keeper Maddy Schulte slammed shut the door in the final ten minutes and the undefeated Lambert girls punched their ticket for the 2019 Georgia 7A final match!
For the game, Lambert outshot Brookwood, 13-8. Schulte made 6 saves in the Longhorn goal, while the Broncos keeper made 4 saves. The shutout was Lambert's 19th of the season. The ladies have, so far, outscored their opponents, by an amazing 107-3!
The Lady Longhorns, ranked #1 in the state, will go after their second state championship in three years Saturday as they face #4-ranked North Gwinnett (17-3-0). North Gwinnett defeated #2-ranked Parkview, 3-2, to reach the state final. The Lady Bulldogs have outscored their opponents this year, 59-18.
Lambert and North Gwinnett have played each other once this season. The Lady Longhorns came out on top, 3-1, in a game played April 9th at the Horn.
