It was a memorable night for eight graduating Lambert boys varsity players who were recognized by the team before Tuesday’s match against Denmark High School. Once the game started, one of them—striker Hayden Fontana—made even more memories, scoring four goals in the first half, pacing the Longhorns (15-1-0) to a 5-0 win over the Denmark Danes (4-11-1).
Fontana started his scoring rampage at the 10-minute mark of the half, heading in a slick cross from the corner from forward Thomas Powers.
Powers, also a graduating senior, scored a goal of his own just six minutes later. The play was set up by another graduating senior, Kyler Darsey, who stole the ball from the Danes keeper. Darsey made a quick pass to sophomore Tyler Nadiak, positioned directly in front of the goal. Nadiak immediately slid the ball to Powers who blasted home the shot from the right edge of the box. 2-0, Lambert.
From that point, it was the "Hayden Fontana Show". Barely a minute after the ‘Horns’ second goal, Fontana scored their third,. Always dangerous on the counterattack, the speedy forward took a long pass in stride, raced behind the defense and chipped over the onrushing keeper.
With the Danes reeling. Fontana won the ball after the Danes failed to clear it, and rolled in his third tally of the match with 18 minutes left in the first half. Not satisfied with only a hat trick, Fontana fired home his fourth goal of the match with 10 minutes left on another great individual effort in which he raced through the Denmark defense and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Fontana is the first Longhorn varsity boys player to score four goals or more in a match since the 2012 season, according to Lambert Coach Chris Wilson.
Halftime score: Lambert 5, Denmark 0. While the Lambert defense and graduating senior keeper Chris Smith were seldom challenged in the first 40 minutes, Smith awed the crowd with a leaping save to push a rising shot just clear of his goal in the final moments of the half.
The ‘Horns substituted freely in the second half, clearing their bench. There was no further scoring in the match and, at the final whistle, Lambert celebrated an easy 5-0 win over Denmark, a new Forsyth county school playing its first season of soccer. Lambert outshot the Danes in the match, 22-6.
The ‘Horns return to the pitch Thursday for their final regular season home match against Harrison High School (7-9-1) of Cobb County. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
