Longhorns use free kick firepower to subdue West Forsyth
Lambert boys varsity completed an undefeated regular season road schedule Monday with a 3-1 win at West Forsyth (0-12-2). And, in this match, they pulled out the heavy artillery to dismantle their opponents. Two of the Longhorn goals came on powerful free kicks.
As they have through much of the season, Lambert scored first, with senior Kyler Darsey finding the net on a beautiful header with 22 minutes remaining in the first half.
Twelve minutes later, the ‘Horns padded their lead on a blistering free kick by captain Nick Alliston..
But, West fought back, scoring a goal in the last five minutes of the half. In fact, the Wolverines played some of their best soccer in the match as the clock wound down to end the first half. It was 2-1. Lambert, with unfinished business still ahead.
The ‘Horns grabbed complete control in the second half. Sophomore Julian Cuervo clanged a shot off the goal post with just under 18 minutes remaining. Senior Hayden Fontana also had a good chance just minutes later, firing a shot just wide of the net.
Finally, with fewer than 10 minutes left to play, senior Jay Patterson blasted a free kick from distance, The keeper had no chance as the ball flew into the net, giving the Longhorns their third goal and, ultimately, their 14th win of the season.
With the victory, Lambert locked up an undefeated record in road games, winning all seven matches away from the Horn. The team also was perfect in Region 5 games, winning all ten.
Lambert (14-1-0) has a quick turnaround Tuesday as the ‘Horns host Denmark High School. The Danes (4-10-1) are Forsyth County’s newest high school and are playing their first soccer season. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Longhorns’ final regular season match is Thursday at the Horn against Harrison High School (7-9-1) of Cobb County.
