Region Champions AGAIN! Longhorns steam past Milton for third straight Region 5-7A crown
They did it again! 2017, 2018, now 2019 Lambert boys varsity are the champions of Region 5. The undefeated Longhorns (12-0-0) took the crown with a hard-fought 3-1 win over a talented Milton Eagles (9-5- 1) team Wednesday at the Horn.
The ‘Horns took an early 1-0 lead in this one, with striker Hayden Fontana volleying in a precise corner kick from sophomore Julian Cuervo just six minutes into the match.
Milton, which entered the game with a five-game winning streak, battled back. The Eagles tied things up on a header off a free kick with 15 minutes remaining in the half. The goal was only the third yielded by the Longhorns this season.
The teams slugged it out for the rest of the first half, ending up 1-1.
They would remain tied until, with just under 20 minutes left in the match, Fontana took a pass from Thomas Powers and, firing across his body, beat the Eagle keeper for the lead goal.
Milton continued to try to create chances to get the tying goal against a solid Lambert defense and keeper Chris Smith, but it would be Lambert which found the back of the net once more with 14 minutes to play. Midfielder Julian Cuervo blasted a rising, curling shot from 20 yards. The ball zipped past the keeper, kissed off the goal post and into the back of the net. It was one of the prettiest goals of the Longhorn season.
And, it was also the end for the Eagles. They posed little danger for the rest of the match, and Lambert beat them for the second time this season. Final score: LAMBERT 3, MILTON 1.
When the final horn sounded and the Longhorns took their victory trot to salute their fans, the announcement was made by PA announcer Dale Darsey: “Salute your Lambert Longhorns, Region 5 champions, again!”
The State Champion Longhorns will now take a week away for Spring Break. As they enter the break, the ‘Horns have outscored their opponents for the season, 36-3. The team is ranked second in the state and, in some rankings, as high as third in the nation.
They return to the pitch on April 9 for a non-region home match against a strong North Gwinnett team (8-3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
