Lambert boys varsity went to play in the Tennessee mountains Monday. But, when they got there, they were all business, taking down Baylor School of Chattanooga, 4- 0.
This was Baylor’s first game of the season. The Raiders won the Tennessee state IIAA soccer championship in 2018.
Lambert, the 2018 Georgia state 7A champions, got off to a fast start. The 100-mile bus trip to Baylor’s campus on the banks of the Tennessee River apparently didn’t affect them. Campbell Wilson, assisted by Hayden Fontana, opened the scoring at the five-minute mark. And, the Longhorns never looked back.
Later in the half, junior Brogan Riggle scored his first varsity goal, following up on a strong free kick from Jay Patterson. 2-0 Lambert at halftime.
The ‘Horns continued to punish the Raiders in the second half on both sides of the field. The defense and goalkeepers pitched another shutout, their seventh in a row. Jay Patterson, Harry Maughan, Grant Ziegler, Trey Kirksey and Noah Sivinski played another stellar game in the back. Keepers Chris Smith and Joao Moreira were also unbeatable between the pipes.
The offense notched two second-half goals to lock up the win. Yeonsung Lee slotted home a terrific pass from Kyler Dorsey for the third goal. Hayden Fontana finished the scoring on an assist from Thomas Powers. Final score: Lambert 4, Baylor 0.
The ‘Horns move to 7-0-0 on the season. They have outscored their seven opponents by a combined 21-0. Lambert returns home for a big showdown Thursday at 7 p.m. against conference foe Forsyth Central (6-2-0). The game was rescheduled after inclement weather forced a postponement last Friday. There will be no admission charge for Thursday’s game.
