Four-goal burst buries Milton, Longhorns move to 6-0-0
Lambert varsity boys broke up a tight contest Tuesday with a flurry of late scoring by four different players to defeat the Milton Eagles, 4-0.
For the first 60 minutes at Eagles Stadium, it was anyone’s game to win. Lambert and Milton battled end-to-end, with both teams missing golden opportunities.
In the first half, an apparent Lambert goal was disallowed. The Eagles failed to convert a couple of close-in chances, firing over the goal or unable to solve Longhorn keeper Chris Smith. At the half, the teams remained locked in a scoreless draw.
The second half brought more of the same, with both teams threatening, but not scoring. Then, with 20 minutes left, a Milton player missed a point-blank chance, firing the ball just over the crossbar.
The ‘Horns countered quickly. A long pass downfield led to a dangerous break and shot on goal. . The Milton keeper parried away the ball, but failed to control it. Lambert midfielder Yeonsung Lee pounced on the rebound and fired home the game’s first goal in the 61st minute.
Just two minutes later, Lambert striker Hayden Fontana converted another rebound for a 2-0 Longhorn lead. Then, two minutes after that, in the 65th minute, sophomore midfielder Julian Cuervo blasted home a deflected shot from 25 yards to push the ‘Horns’ lead to 3-0.
Sophomore Tyler Nadiak put an emphatic exclamation point on the Longhorn victory, scoring a nifty spin-and-shoot goal with only 17 seconds left on the clock. With his back to the goal, Nadiak spun around to slip between two defenders and rolled a spinning ball into the net.
Lambert moved to 6-0-0 on the season, Milton fell to 4-4-1 and lost its first home game of the season. The ‘Horns also have won all six of their games without yielding a goal, outscoring their opponents by a total of 17-0,
