Two Lambert seniors teamed up Friday for a magic moment and the only goal in a 1-0 win over West Forsyth.
In the waning minutes of the first half, winger Thomas Powers raced down the left sideline past his defender and lofted a highlight-reel cross into the goal mouth. The ball soared over the defense and the keeper’s outstretched arms. Waiting to pounce and all alone on the right edge of the goal, winger Kyler Darsey made no mistake, heading the ball neatly into the back of the net.
The ‘Horns and their fans celebrated, the Wolverines stood stunned.
The goal would be the only one of the match, as the two teams struggled for advantage throughout the second half.
And, as they have all season, the sturdy Lambert defense and keeper Chris Smith refused to be beaten, withstanding a furious push from West in the game’s final moments. The shutout is Lambert’s fifth straight this season as the ‘Horns moved to 5-0-0, while West dropped to 0-5-2.
Lambert takes its show on the road on Tuesday, visiting always-tough Milton (4-2-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
This will be a key week for the Longhorns. After the Milton game, they return to the ‘Horn Friday for a pivotal home match against improving Forsyth Central (5-2-0).
