Horns pitch another shutout, move to 2-0
LAMBERT 3, ST. PIUS 0
Lambert boys varsity overcame the opponents and the elements Friday as the Longhorns (2-0) beat the St.Pius Golden Lions (1-2-1) at the ‘Horn. After an opening-season 2-0 shutout over Lovett, the Lambert defense and keeper Chris Smith posted another impressive clean sheet over St Pius, 3-0. The contest was played in a steady drizzle that soaked players and fans for most the game. The shutout was Lambert boys’ 201st in program history.
The Lambert offense controlled the ball for much of the first half, and struck for three goals. Sophomore forward Tyler Nadiak opened the scoring midway through the half, converting a pretty cross from Kyler Darsey. Nadiak scored a second goal later. Sophomore Yeonsung Lee closed out the scoring, slotting home a corner kick from the edge of the goal, shortly before the end of the half.
St. Pius never recovered.
The Lions did push forward in the second half and had a brief offensive thrust with three consecutive corner kicks. But, the Lambert defense held firm and did not concede a goal. As the second half clock wound down, Lambert renewed the offensive pressure, coming close to a fourth goal on a beautiful header which clanked off the crossbar. But the closing whistle sounded with no further scoring, and the ‘Horns celebrated a soggy, but well-deserved win.
