Two goals in the final ten minutes propelled Lambert Boys Varsity Soccer (1-0) to a 2-0 win over The Lovett School (0-1) on Friday at the Horn. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
Lambert’s slick passing and ball possession offense led to several corner kicks and potential scoring chances in the first half, but the teams were scoreless after 40 minutes.
In the second half, Lambert continued to push its advantage, but, with only 10 minutes remaining, the ‘Horns still found themselves locked in a scoreless tie.
Finally, with time winding down, Campbell Wilson forced his way through the defense and slid the ball past the Lovett keeper for a 1-0 Lambert lead with only seven minutes to play. Then, just two minutes later, Longhorn striker Hayden Fontana, held in check for most of the night by a tight Lovett defense, broke free from his defender and zipped a shot past the goalie and into the lower left corner of the net.
The stubborn Longhorn defense and keeper Chris Smith—both stellar all game—held firm to close out the game in favor of the State Champs. Lambert 2, Lovett 0. It was the 200th shutout in the storied history of the Lambert boys varsity program.
The Longhorns return to the pitch on Friday, February 15 for a home match against St. Pius X Catholic High School (1-0-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45pm.
