They did it!

Our Lambert Longhorns won state 7-A Championship Saturday night with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over arch-rivals South Forsyth. Hundreds of Longhorn fans made the long trek to McEachern HS in West Cobb to loudly cheer on the champs in an epic, “knockdown-drag out” clash involving Forsyth County’s top two soccer programs. And, it was a game that did not disappoint.

The ‘Horns came out attacking after the opening whistle and, within the first ten minutes, Logan Racine headed in a beautiful cross from Hayden Fontana for a 1-0 Lambert lead. But, to their credit, South Forsyth pushed back and, with fewer than ten minutes left in the half scored on a long, looping shot from distance. 1-1 at halftime. Nothing settled, with 40 minutes to go.

As in the first half, the Longhorns struck quickly in the second half. With 32 minutes left, Darsey drove deep into the War Eagle box, then slid a perfect pass across the goal where Noah Sivinski was waiting. GOAL!! 2-1 Lambert.

South Forsyth, a team used to fighting back, pressed for the equalizer, but, despite a barrage of corner kicks and crosses, keeper Cole Scott and his rock-solid defenders held firm and kept the ball out of the goal.

The War Eagles grew more desperate as the Longhorns and the clock worked steadily against them. Finally, with just under 6 minutes to play, Darsey made another great pass to striker Hayden Fontana, who beat the keeper from close range for a 3-1 Lambert lead.

The Longhorn cheering section, including dozens of students, began to sense victory and celebrate loudly as the clock wound to under a minute. But, South was not done….not yet. The War Eagles scored a goal with 41 seconds left to momentarily hush the Lambert fans and silence the celebration. The ‘Horns, however, grabbed the ball after that and ran down the clock. Delirium swept the field and the stands as the final whistle sounded.

Congratulations to this hard-working, highly-skilled group of young men who overcame all odds and all comers to bring home the second state boys soccer championship in Lambert history. Congratulation, too, to Coach Wilson and his terrific staff for all their hard work in molding this team into something very, very special.
