LONGHORNS TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!
The band of brothers known simply as Lambert Varsity Boys Soccer is so much more. NOW, CALL THEM FINALISTS FOR THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP OF GEORGIA!
The Longhorns fought off a stiff challenge from Campbell HS of Cobb County on Tuesday, turning a 1-0 nailbiter at half-time into a convincing 5-0 victory at the final whistle.
Lambert sophomore keeper Cole Scott undoubtedly played his best game of the season, slamming the door on several dangerous shots from a Campbell player so skilled that he had already scored 25 goals this season.
Scott’s heroics held the game scoreless until Logan Racine smashed in a perfect header off a flawless throwin from defender Jay Patterson with 4 minutes to go in the first half. The large crowd at the Horn exploded with glee. 1-0—LAMBERT!
As the second half began, Campbell’s high powered offense again closed in on Scott and the Longhorn goal. But, once again Scott and his defenders held them off, diving, flying, doing whatever was necessary to protect that slim lead.
As the clock ran inside 20 minutes, the Longhorn offense began to penetrate the Campbell defensive zone, taking control of the ball and the clock. A foul call led to a free kick within shooting range for Jay Patterson. He fired, the ball deflected off a player and slithered into the net. 2-0—LAMBERT!!
Moments later, ‘Horn forward Thomas Powers burst in alone on the keeper from the left. His low shot was deflected just wide by the goalie to an onrushing Hayden Fontana. The Lambert striker made no mistake, slamming the ball into the back of the net. 3-0—LAMBERT!!!
With only 6 minutes remaining, Fontana bounced in a long shot which seemed to surprise the keeper. 4-0—LAMBERT!!!
Then, finally with the Horn in full celebration mode, Racine used his head to great effect one final time to nod in a Tyler Nadiak corner with 3 minutes remaining. 5-0—LAMBERT!!!!!
The final whistle sounded, the fans rushed the field and even as the players celebrated, they already had gotten the news: Ancient and bitter rival South Forsyth had won the other semifinal and be their opponents for the state championship.
