Lambert Girls Win 7-A State Championship
It had all the prerequisites for a great state championship match, and the Lambert vs Grayson game lived up to the expectations. The same two teams met in the state finals in 2015, where Grayson came out ahead. The Lambert upperclasswomen were looking to avenge that defeat. The same two teams met very early this season, where Grayson won 1-0. But the Lady Longhorns knew that they were a different team than they were back in February, and it's the last game of the season that matters the most.
Lambert took the lead in the first half through a goal by senior Maddie Eddleman. Grayson came roaring back to get the better run of possession for the remainder of the first half, but the Lambert defense thwarted attack after attack to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
Grayson came out of the intermission flying and equalized less than a minute into the second half. From there on it was a barnburner with both teams going back and forth, trading scoring opportunities. The Longhorns were on their heels near the end of regulation, and the referee's whistle was exactly what they needed.
Lambert absolutely owned overtime! Alisa Barr got on the end of a great free kick from M.E. Craven to put the Longhorns back up 2-1 just a couple of minutes into OT. From there, Lambert was very composed and dominated possession to keep Grayson at bay and close out the match.
"It was just an epic battler between two very worthy opponents," said Lambert head coach Scott Luthart. "I'm truly blesses to have been part of it."
The Lambert Girls are the GHSA AAAAAAA State Champions! They finished the season on a school record 14th straight victory. In the state playoffs, they outscored their opponents by a combined 18 to 1, and goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert anchored the defense that shutout 4 of their 5 opponents.
Congrats to the Lady Longhorns on an incredible season!
