When Lambert hosted Mill Creek on Tuesday night in the GHSA state semifinals, most expected a tight match that mirrored the preseason friendly the teams played back in February which Lambert won 3-2. But the Lady Longhorns are a much different team than they were in February - a much better team.
Alisa Barr got the Longhorns on the scoreboard in the 16th minute after Lambert dominated the early going. Despite getting the better of the possession and chances, the ladies were unable to extend their lead and the halftime score remained 1-0.
The only chances Mill Creek were able to mount were on restarts, and the Lambert defense was up to the task. But the longer the game stayed at 1-0, the more nervous the raucous, partisan crowd became, fearing a fluke that could send the game on its head. But that was when freshman Madison Haugen took center stage.
Midway through the second half, Haugen doubled the Longhorn advantage and that seemed to take the wind out of Mill Creek's sails. But the Longhorns didn't just settle for that. Haugen would add a third goal in the 77th minute and then another in the 79th to earn the hat trick and make the final tally 4-0.
Not to be overlooked is the continued stellar play of the Lambert defense who posted their 8th straight shutout. Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert and the back line have not conceded a goal in the playoffs, and have not been scored on by a team from Georgia since March 16th.
The Lady Longhorns are in the 7-A State Championship and will play Grayson High School. The two teams met in the 6-A State Championship two years ago, and also played each other earlier this season, which Grayson won 1-0. But, as we said, the Lady Longhorns are a much different team than they were in February. It should be a great match!
Lambert and Grayson will play on Saturday (5/13) at 5 p.m. at McEachern High School. Make the trip over to Marietta this weekend and cheer on the girls to the championship! Hook 'em, Horns!
