The Longhorns came from behind on Monday night to secure the Region 5 AAAAAAA Championship with a 3-2 overtime victory over Milton. The match was a continuation of one that was rained out earlier in the season.
Picking up where the match was suspended, Milton was up 1-0 with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. The Longhorns played well, winning the ball and creating chances. Just a couple of minutes before halftime, Zane Ziegler leveled the match at 1-1 with a heads-up play in front of the goal mouth.
Out of the break, Milton seized some momentum back and began to create some chances for themselves. With both teams playing physical and fast-paced, it was up and down the field for the first 15 minutes of the second half. A blocked clearance by the Lambert defense created a series of deflections before falling to the feet of a Milton player who slotted home a goal to put the visitors up 2-1.
Lambert threw everything forward and peppered the Milton goalkeeper for the next 20 minutes, but could not break through. With under two minutes in regulation, a hand ball inside the penalty area gave Lambert a penalty kick. Eoin Griffiths slammed it into the corner to tie the match and send it to overtime.
In the extra frame, it seemed only a matter of time, and within 4 minutes, Ziegler scored his second of the match to put Lambert ahead for the first time in the match. The boys showed a lot of composure in the tense final minutes to close out the match and celebrate their region championship. Final score: Lambert 3; Milton 2.
