In front of a great crowd at the Horn on Friday night, the Longhorns were on a mission to avenge an earlier season loss to South. On the front foot from the start, Lambert threatened time and again and you could sense it was only a matter of time. Eoin Griffiths sent a perfect cross-field ball to the foot of Zane Ziegler, who cut back to his left foot and beat the South keeper to put the home team up 1-0.
In the second half, South seized momentum briefly and looked dangerous, but the defense stood tall and frustrated the War Eagles, turning the tide back in their favor. Griffiths went from provider to goalscorer a few minutes later with a bullet shot that the keeper couldn't handle. Up 2-0, the Longhorns never let up, controlling the tempo and looking for more. Griffiths would strike again late in the match with a laser free kick in the upper corner to make the final tally 3-0. Griffiths now has 14 goals on the season.
Not to be overlooked was the stellar play of the defense. The back line of Trey Hines, Christian Girard, Gabe Fontana, Logan Racine and Nick Alliston, along with goalkeeper Avery Dekshenieks earned their fourth straight region shutout.
Sitting atop the standings in the region, the boys have two more region games this week: Tuesday they play at West before returning home on Thursday to play Milton. Both matches start at 8 p.m. Hook 'em, Horns!
